Biography

Makayla was a perfectly healthy, happy baby.
She always exceeded in meeting all of her milestones from day 1.
At 10 months old she had her first case of tonsillitis and from there it was reoccurring every 2-3 months. With each presentation she was prescribed antibiotics and the infection usually subsided. Her GP’s were sure that she would eventually grow out of this with age and the maturation of her immune system, therefore they did not recommend a tonsillectomy.

When she was 7 she again fell ill and was diagnosed with tonsillitis again. However his time the tonsils were completely obstructing her throat. She was admitted into hospital for over antibiotics and anti viral medication and discharged with no improvement on 2 occasions. On the third admission (all within a month of each other) the decision was made to remove her tonsils and adenoids due to there size. Six days later she was diagnosed with blood cancer, T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Lymphoma. We were almost immediately transferred 1400km from home to the Queensland Children’s Hospital to start treatment.

Makayla will undergo 2 and a half years of active treatment and is currently 20 months in. She is doing so well now but it has not been without difficulties.

She has so far overcome countless infections, devastating side effects and procedures, she has missed over a year of school and being away from home and has lost friends to this disease along the way.

She is a superhero
